Many wonder if they should clean the dryer duct. In Quebec, clothes dryers were the cause of 592 fires between 2011 and 2015 causing $3.9 million in damage. In the United States, 15,520 fires for the year 2010 would be attributable to clothes dryers. In 32% of cases, or 4,966 fires, the cause is related to lint buildup and poor dryer duct maintenance.* Although statistics show that the risk of a dryer duct fire is relatively low, they clearly indicate that the risk is real and that it is possible to fall victim to a similar situation. Considering the modest cost of such maintenance, is the risk worth it?
PREVENTION
When a home or condominium unit owner calls us for their dryer duct cleaning, it’s usually because a problem with lint buildup in the duct has occurred. Don’t wait for this to happen to you. Often one of the first symptoms to appear is difficulty drying clothes after washing. Indeed, since the duct has difficulty evacuating the humid air from the dryer, it takes longer to dry the laundry. By the same token, the lifespan of the dryer is reduced and the probability that problems with the operation of the appliance will occur remains higher.
FREQUENCY OF DRYER DUCT CLEANING
You should not wait until the duct is completely clogged before cleaning your dryer duct. The duct should be cleaned preventively to avoid problems. How often? The answer depends on your installation and also on the use of your dryer. In some cases, it will be necessary to have the dryer duct cleaned preventively every five years, while for others, it is not necessary. If your conduit is very short, for example one meter, you can clean it yourself using a vacuum cleaner. If it is longer, you will need to hire a contractor with the equipment required to perform such cleaning. At Ultra Air, we offer this service.

The internationally recognized standard of excellence in the field of ventilation duct cleaning is called ASCS (Air Systems Cleaning Specialist) and is issued by the NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association), an American non-profit association. Over 1200 members from 20 countries are ASCS certified. At Ultra Air Inc., we have had our certification for nearly 10 years. The process for obtaining and maintaining certification is rigorous:

- Pass the certification exam covering the following areas of knowledge:
- Duct cleaning methods
- Pollutants and contaminants present in air ducts
- Association code of ethics
- Have a valid liability insurance policy
- Obtain 6 continuing education credits annually
- Pay annual renewal fees
