Several people wonder if they should clean the dryer evacuation duct. In Quebec, dryers duct were responsible for 592 fires between 2011 and 2015 causing 3.9 million dollars in damages. In 2010 in the United States, 15 520 fires were attributed to dryers duct. In 32% of the cases, which amounts to 4 966 fires, the cause was linked to the accumulation of lint and a lack of maintenance of the dryer duct. Even though the statistics show a low risk of having a fire caused by the dryer duct, they clearly indicate that the risk is real and that it is possible to be a victim of such a situation.
Considering the moderate cost of such maintenance, is the risk worth taking?
When the owner of a home or a condominium calls us to clean their dryer’s duct, it usually is because of a problem linked to the accumulation of lint in the duct. Don’t wait for that to happen to you. More often than not, the first sign to appear will be the difficulty to dry the clothes after washing. This is because since the dryer duct has difficulty evacuating the humid air from the dryer, the later takes more time in drying the clothes. This also reduces the life span of the dryer and the probability of having problems with the functioning of the appliance is higher.
You should not wait for the dryer duct to be completely blocked before proceeding to the cleaning of your dryer’s duct. The duct has to be cleaned as a preventive measure in order to avoid any problems. How often? The answer depends on your installation and the use of your dryer. In certain cases, the dryer’s duct could need to be done every three years and in other cases, it would not be necessary. For example, if your dryer duct is very short, like one meter, you can clean it yourself with a vacuum cleaner. In the case where it is longer, you will have to call upon an entrepreneur who has the required equipment to perform such a cleaning. At Ultra Air, we offer this service.
If you own a large building or a multi-apartment building, you should plan to have the dryers’ duct cleaned every 2 years. The dryer’s duct that are long and sinuous and those that end on the roof of a building of several floors will sooner or later have the tendency to accumulate lint.
